What is volume?
Volume is the amount of three-dimensional space a shape takes up. Put simply, if you filled a box, ball, tank or container with water, sand or air, the amount it could hold is its volume. Volume is always measured in cubic units, such as cubic centimetres, cubic metres or litres.
Working out volume shows up everywhere in everyday life: in construction, to calculate how much concrete or screed is needed; in packaging and shipping, to know how much a box can hold; in aquariums and water tanks, to check their capacity; and throughout school and college maths and science.
